My First Tape

Since the age of the 3, I have been obsessed with visits to the record store. Being the daughter of a ballet instructor helped. My mom’s endless need for more music made for frequent trips to the local shop. I carried my little tape player with me as my constant companion. I can still see it, little brown tape player, microphone attached. No words only symbols for play, stop, fast forward, rewind and record. I would beg my dad to tape me being a rock star and of course my rock star of choice was Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks… My first tape was Alvin and the Chipmunks, Chipmunk Rock.

“The Leader of the Pack” originally by the Shangri-Las was my favorite, but I am sure I listened to each song well over 3,000 times. “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” was another favorite. The track listing on that album is phenomenal really. I had no idea the goldmine I was carrying around, or maybe I did. It was never too far out of my reach. I eventually grew out of it, but my record store visits continued and I was accompanied usually with my older cousin whom I tried to impress with buying cooler tapes. My daughter found those tapes recently and  I think a piece of me died when we couldn’t find the chipmunk tape. I’m sure it’s no longer even functional, but she calls these tapes her treasure. Although she’s not quite sure what to do with them as they wont go inside her little iPad, but somehow she knows how special they once were to me. I’m on the lookout for a tape player for her little hands and also that chipmunk tape. Even if it means I’m only raising a mini me…

Yes today just happens to be my birthday, and if you know me well, you would know how much I cherish this day. I have always loved parties and celebration and well if that was about me, of course bring it on ha ha. These days I celebrate and go a bit crazy over my girls’ birthday instead, but that little kid in me still wants the celebration! I hope you all have a great day and enjoy it for me. Please turn this tape (link) up really loud and jump around… I am right there with you!
